Celebrating Independence in a Unique Way: My 4th of July Experience

As someone who actively serves in the military, my love for my country runs deep. Yet, despite the rich tradition and significance of the Fourth of July, my celebration has always been a rather low-key affair – unless, of course, I find myself outside the United States bubble.

For many living in countries other than the United States, the Fourth of July typically passes unnoticed without much fanfare. In my case, it is just another day at work, albeit a bit more diligently celebrated with a barbecue and picnic.

Uniqueness in Celebration

The conventional 4th of July celebrations in the U.S. revolve around barbecues, picnics, and fireworks. However, for those elsewhere, there's always a chance to find a unique way to celebrate, honing in on the spirit of freedom and unity.

A Canadian Perspective on Independence Day

Given that I am Canadian, the idea of celebrating American Independence Day might seem peculiar. However, my personal experience on that day often begins before dawn, when I put on an official green shirt and khakis, pick up my flute, and head to a church in Dublin, Ohio, for a patriotic band concert on the church lawn. Rain was a minor obstacle, and by the end of the morning, the sun was scorching.

After the concert, I detoured through several parade routes, driving to Hilliard, a suburb of Columbus. I enjoyed sliders and fries at The Old Bag of Nails, then changed into a white Hilliard shirt and black pants. I played my trumpet in an indoor patriotic band concert, and once again, the rain had avoided the area. As the temperatures soared, I headed back home, showered, and put on my original outfit once more to drive to Plain City in the neighboring county.

A Country Fair in Plain City

Plain City was hosting a country fair in their largest park, featuring food trucks with funnel cakes and lemon shakeups, as well as children carrying ping pong balls on spoons. I played my flute in yet another patriotic band concert. With the night falling, we ended the evening with a spirited performance of the 1812 Overture, synchronized with a spectacular fireworks display. Boom, pop, bang! The display was particularly impressive for a small town, and we watched in awe as the colorful firework flowers blossomed in the sky.

By the time the fireworks dissipated, it was close to midnight. BBQs, picnics, parades, and band concerts – these are the ways I choose to celebrate the spirit of freedom and unity on that special day, even when I find myself outside the borders of the United States. It's a unique but equally meaningful way to honor Independence Day.

Conclusion

While the Fourth of July might not hold the same significance in other countries, the spirit of celebration and unity can be found in various creative and unique ways. As for me, I'll always cherish my personal and unique approach to celebrating this iconic American holiday, wherever I may be.
