Are You F*cking Kidding Me Right Now
February 24th, 2017. That day marked a turning point in my life. My path to higher education was far from straightforward, with numerous obstacles and disappointments along the way. But on this particular day, I received confirmation from all the courses I had applied to: Forensic Psychology, Forensic Chemistry, Psychology, and Biochemistry. It was overwhelming and transformative.
The Journey to Study Abroad
Living in Brazil, my dream was to study in the UK. However, the process was extensive and challenging. I had to translate all my grades and documents officially from Portuguese to English. I also needed to submit all possible documents to prove that I had been living in the UK for at least three years prior to the start of my chosen course. Language tests were necessary to demonstrate my proficiency in English, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Additionally, I had to secure letters of recommendation from former teachers and personal recommendation letters from people who knew me well. Lastly, I had to prepare a personal statement and, of course, the daunting task of paying the tuition fee.
A Journey of Rejection to Acceptance
I had been applying for higher education for around five years, but each time it seemed like something was missing, and I was rejected. There was always a setback. But I refused to give up. Eventually, I gathered all my prepared documents and sent them off. When I received my confirmation, I was the happiest person alive. I was finally going to start my higher education, get my diploma, and achieve a qualification. It was a moment of triumph and relief.
The Shocking Twist: A New Chapter of Life
That joy was short-lived, as fate had other plans. It was around 2 in the morning, and I was still awake celebrating with my husband. Then, just 15 minutes later, I found myself sitting on the toilet holding a pregnancy test. The word that stunned me the most – and one I was eager to avoid – was 'pregnant.' It was a startling revelation, bringing a host of emotions: tears, shock, laughter, anger, and finally acceptance.
The universe had handed me an unexpected, yet incredible, surprise. My due date coincided with the start of the academic term. I was overwhelmed with joy and a mix of emotions. I was essentially due to welcome a new life into the world right when my academic journey was about to begin. Life has a way of surprising us in the most unexpected ways.
A New Priority: Maternity and Academia
The news of my pregnancy was a turning point. I had to defer my application for higher education. Instead of becoming a full-time student, I became a full-time mum, while also pursuing part-time forensic psychology studies. It was a bit crazier and tighter, but it wasn't insurmountable. Life always finds a way.
A Son to Inspire
In October 2017, my beautiful baby boy was born on Halloween, adding a new chapter to my life. He has become my little helper, guiding me through the unexpected journey of parenthood and academia. He taught me that life doesn't always go according to plan, but these unplanned surprises can be the fuel to keep us going.
He is the sweetest, cutest, and most amazing little person I know. Every day, I regret not having him for a second. He is the light of my life, and his presence has made me appreciate life even more. While my academic ambitions may have shifted, my journey to self-discovery and resilience remains unwavering.
Final Thoughts
Life often surprises us in the most unexpected ways, and it's how we choose to navigate these surprises that defines our journey. From my journey of rejection to acceptance, and from the shock of pregnancy to the joy of parenthood, it's a story of resilience and personal growth.
