Is Akron OH a Good Place to Raise a Family?
Ive lived in Akron since 1998, when I was 9, and Im now 30 years old. I have six children with my husband, and we have never had any issues with our decision to raise our family here. We love Akron and it has been a wonderful experience for us.
Personal Connection to Akron
Although I was born in Iron, Ohio, I grew up in Houston, Texas, after my family moved away. However, I have nothing but fond memories of Akron, and recent visits back to the area have solidified my belief that Akron would have been an ideal place to raise a family for me.
We moved to Akron in 1999, when my son was in 4th grade and my daughter was in Kindergarten. They consider Akron their hometown, and so do my husband and I. My daughter, who has since married and lives and works locally, has shown her attachment to the area. My son is currently serving in the Navy, but he still maintains a strong connection to Akron.
Pros and Cons of Raising a Family in Akron
Add to Vickie's list a fantastic public library system and a dozen excellent parks managed by Summit County, which offer fun and affordable activities year-round for families. I live within the city limits, and I genuinely enjoy living in the city proper. However, if I were to move now, I would still opt for the Akron area outside of the city. The city government has made some fiscal mistakes over the past thirty years, so it affects property taxes and sewer bills. Always compare before making a purchase.
When it comes to the weather, I consider it a significant asset. Akron typically sits just south of the snow belt, and while winters can be cold, they are generally less severe than in areas to the north. We have four distinct seasons, which make it ideal for activities such as sledding, hiking, and swimming. This summer, the weather was one of the best since we moved here, with temperatures mainly in the mid-80s and very low humidity.
Housing is relatively inexpensive, though the quality of local schools varies. You can open-enroll your children in better districts if needed. Akron also has a minor league baseball team, the Rubber Ducks, as well as various cultural activities within easy reach in Cleveland. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is just one hour away, providing ample natural beauty and recreational opportunities.
While the weather and climate can be unpredictable, it offers a diverse range of experiences throughout the year. Despite the fluctuating weather, I love living in Akron and have no plans to move elsewhere. If you are considering raising a family in Akron, weigh the pros and cons carefully, but be prepared for an experience that offers much more than meets the eye.
