Why Paragramnal Investigators Don't Run: Debunking TV Drama Myths

Over the past three decades, I've dedicated my life to the field of paranormal investigations. My experiences are diverse and extensive, ranging from encounters with possessions and demons to ghostly voices and spectral phenomena. Despite the keen audience that many paranormal groups aim to draw, I've never experienced the fear that often purports through television and YouTube channels. In this article, I will discuss why many paranormal investigators don't run for the door, and the reasons behind the sensationalized portrayal in popular media.

Tackling the Misconceptions on Television

Television and YouTube channels often sensationalize paranormal investigations, presenting them in a manner that is highly entertaining but not reflective of the true nature of the work. The primary goal of these shows is to attract viewers, which means that they present an overly dramatic and often unrealistic portrayal of what actually happens during an investigation. While real investigations can be intriguing, they are also filled with lengthy periods of nothing much happening, followed by sporadic bursts of activity that might include touching, items being thrown, or voice communications. However, the audience is only privy to the exciting moments, and the meticulous analysis of the data collected, which can often take hours or days, is rarely, if ever, shown.

Most paranormal groups view the on-screen dramatization as a comedic matter. They understand that the vast majority of their experience is spent analyzing data, a process that, while important, is not nearly as exciting to watch. The groups that do attempt to present a more realistic portrayal are often criticized for their lack of dramatic tension. The truth is, the vast majority of ghost hunters and paranormal investigators stay for the full duration of their investigations, understanding the importance of thorough data collection and analysis.

Real-Life Experiences and Data Analysis

Over the years, I have worked with various paranormal groups across the United States. One of the most crucial lessons I have imparted to emerging investigators is to never run from an investigation. Fear and panic can lead to accidents, especially in the darkness where judgments are harder to make. While some find it difficult to stay, especially when sensors detect unusual signals, a conscious decision to leave the scene can be dangerous. I advise investigators to take a moment to step outside with at least one other person if they feel overwhelmed. It's essential to stay calm and composed to ensure everyone's safety.

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can trigger sensitivity in some individuals, causing discomfort and lingerie to leave a room or home. It is often the leading cause of an investigator wanting to vacate a location. My professional experience has shown that these instances, while concerning, are predominantly manageable and do not necessitate an urgent escape.

Exceptions to the Rule

While I have never personally witnessed an investigator flee during a genuine investigation, the concept is not entirely foreign, as evidenced by documentary footage. However, these instances are rare and often occur under extraordinary circumstances, such as when a heavy object falls from above or when a wild animal is encountered. The most notorious cases of an investigator running occurred in two specific instances:

While investigating a historic building, a substantial concrete slab fell from a second-story roof, making quick evacuations essential for everyone's safety.

In another scenario, an unexpected encounter with a large, aggressive bear forced an immediate and cautionary retreat from the location under investigation.

These examples underscore the importance of remaining vigilant and prepared for unexpected circumstances. While runs from an investigation are exceptional, the vast majority of paranormal investigators remain committed to their work, adhering to the principles of safety and data integrity.

By understanding the reality of paranormal investigations and dispelling the myths perpetuated by television and YouTube, we can appreciate the dedication and professionalism of these investigators. Their work, while often challenging, is an invaluable contribution to the field of paranormal studies.
